What to wear: Black Tie or White Tie

Alright guys, if the invite says “Black Tie” or “White Tie” this isn’t optional!  Occasionally an invitation will say “Black Tie Optional”, in which case either a formal tuxedo or a dark suit and tie are appropriate.

When the invitation specifically lists that it is a black tie event, this is a good excuse to get all dressed up!  It’s probably not every day that you get invited to this formal of an event, so in my opinion, take advantage of it!  Ladies – head to the salon, get a fresh manicure and pedicure.  Men – also head to the salon and get a fresh razor blade shave.  (Is this necessary?  Of course not – it’s just fun!)

After you’re looking (and feeling!) beautiful from the salon, it’s time to pull out that tuxedo that is sitting in the back of your closet (or the one you rented!) and the formal evening gown.  For black tie events, a formal dark colored tuxedo and bow tie are expected for men; ladies are appropriate in a chic cocktail dress or long evening gown.

For a white tie event, this means that the fun is going to be even more formal that black tie!  Men should still be in a tuxedo, but this time the coat should be longer with tails.  Ladies should definitely be in a long ball gown.

If you get invited to events like this, enjoy it.  It’s easy to get stressed about what to wear and the cost associated with dressing so formal.  Take a few nice photos while you’re looking so good and have a blast!
